OBITUARY.
Mrs M. A. Whyte, aged 63.
It is our duty to record the death of one of Foxton’s oldest residents in the*person of Mrs M. A. Whyte, relict of Mr A. J. Whyte, which took place at her residence, Clyde Street, on Thursday afternoon. Mrs Whyte had been in very indifferent health for the past two years, and during the last fortnight had been confined to her bed. Deceased was the oldest daughter of Mr and Mrs Taylor, of Tawa Flat, Wellington, who are both hale and hearty. Mrs Whyte accompanied her husband to Foxton in the early days and assisted her husband to conduct the Family Hotel. Subsequently Mr Whyte erected what is known as Whyte’s Hotel, in Main Street, which still bears his name and which was held in high repute by travellers in the old coaching days. Mrs Whyte carried on the hotel successfully for some time after her husband’s death and before retiring into private life. Mrs Whyte’s kind and sympathetic nature endeared her to a large circle of friends. She was a devoted wife and mother. Deceased leaves the following children to mourn their loss : —Mesdames J. R. McMillan, W. E. Barber (Foxton), E. P. Cowles (Wellington), E. E. Smith (Devin), and Messrs A. J. and J. R. Whyte (Tokomaru), and Mr J. T. Whyte (Foxton). Mrs J. Best, of Te Horo, is a sister of deceased.
The funeral took place this morning and was attended by a large concourse of mourners. The Rev. Mr Young-Woodward conducted the burial service.
We join in tendering our sympathy to the bereaved relatives.
