Fatal Railway Accident at Turakina.
MAORI RUN OVER BY TRAIN. Just as the train from the South was leaving Turakina on Friday night a Maori was seen to run along the platform and endeavour to board the train He succeeded in catching hold of one of the iron rods of the carriage, but could not get his footing, and appeared to let go his hold. He fell between the carriage and the van, the latter passing over his abdomen The poor fellow was frightfully crushed and mangled. The train was stopped, and the injured man (whose name was Poaha Katana), placed in the van* He was conscious for some time afterwards, but died when the train was between Aramoho and Wanganui. Dr Anderson said that death jwas inevitable, owing to the terrible nature of the injuries. The ambulance’waggon, which was Waiting at the station for the purpose of taking the injured man to the Hospital, was utilised instead for the removal of the body to the morgue. Poaha Ratana was a fine looking man of about 30 years of age. Constables : Satherly and Hadler took charge of the body at the station, and superintended its conveyance to the morgue. No blame is attachable to the railway officers.' At the inquest a verdict of accidental death was returned.
