A merchant in Christchurch has torwarded to Mr D. D. Hyde (Government Poultry Expert) a copy of a letter, dated October 22nd, from a firm in Durban, which says:—“We wish to express our satisfaction with the consignment of poultry just received from you. Both ducks and fowls are the best we have yet handled, whether from Australia, New Zealand, Canada or England, and we have personally imported and sold very many from each of these countries.” A large order, with a promise of continuance, accompanied the letter, which is a signal proof of the improvement in the quality of New Zealand poultry and the prospects for this industry. Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman, leader of the Opposition, in a thin and listless House, moved the rejection of the Education Bill on its third reading. His motion for the rejection was negatived by 286 votes to 134, and the third reading was adopted by 346 to 123. China is establishing a direct line of steamers to Mexico, which is the only country open to her emigrants. The prohibition vote in Bruce means the closing in June next of eleven pub-lic-houses. It will be welcome news to the parishioners of Bulls, Sandon and Greatford, says the Advocate, that their new vicar, the Rev. He will take the services next Sunday at Greatford in the morning, Sanson in the afternoon and Bulls in the evening. There will be an opportunity for parishioners to make Mr Isaacson’s acquaintance and to welcome him to the parish at the social gathering to be held on the loth inst. It is hoped that this social will be the means of drawing the Church members together again, and that with the new vicar’s arrival new life will be given to the Church work in the parochial district.

The Government Poultry Expert has returned from the south, where he found the industry showing encouraging signs. One firm in Dunedin has just received an order for 30,000 fowls for South Africa. The Christchurch depot is already very busy, about 100 head of poultry being put through every day. This will probably be trebled at an early date. Taking the whole of the depots, more birds have already passed through this season than for the whole of last season. Last year the export was 38,000, and Mr Hyde anticipates that by the end of the present financial year the output will be 'IOO,OOO head. The season will shortly be in full swing.
