"We wonder that our local Lawn Tennis Club have not before issued a- friendly challenge to the neighbouring clubs. Such meetings would pleasant and would tend to keep- up interest in the game. We suggest to the members to have a meeting and test the feeling of the club on this proposal.
It is possible that Mr Calderwood may add the manufacture of cider to his ©rated water business, and should he do so the orohardists in the district will be very pleased. ' '
It is said that the Otaki Licensing Committee will have an a application made to it to sanction the removal of one publican's lioense from Manakau to Levin. The Act permits such a proceeding but in view of the action taken at the election if such an application was granted the effect would be to very much disturb the equanimity of the trade and unfold to them that their fancied security is liable to be rudely disturbed at any time during the supposed peaceful three years prior to another poll.
Next Sunday morning service will be conducted by the Rev. G. Aitkens at All Saints' Church, Foxton, and at Levin in the evening. The usual evening service will be held at Foxton in the evening by the lay reader.
The Bishop of Nelson has arranged to hold a. confirmation at Foxton on the 13th of next month.
The Salvation Army are having a three days' special go, commencing to-morrow night, to be conducted by Staff-Captain Edwards. The meeting to-morrow night is to be a Holiness one, to which only Christians and soldiers will be admitted.
A chestnut filly foal is impounded and will be sold on Saturday.

The Concert and Coffee supper at the Methodist Church on Tuesday night was a great, success, the building being packed. All the items were rendered hiftefc pleasingly and we ftve glad to say the efforts resulted in a sum of £5 8s being taken.
Messrs Westwood A Co. have an altered advertisement. Amongst the items mentioned are good table potatoes at four shilling and sixpence a sack.
Messrs Loveday Bros, announce that the sale of tne Sydney Drapery Cos.' stock commences on Saturday morning. The sale is for three weeks only. An inset appears with this issue explaining matters still further.
Kapiti on Tuesday appeared to be a favourite locality for pbipping. Under the lee of the highland were anchored the s.s. Maori, which had run from Wanganui for shelter, the steamers Queen of the South, Huia, Storm bird and Manain, and the schooner Clyde.

"Phiz" in the Christchuroh Press is giving a series of pen and ink sketches of our representatives. He thus concludes about Mr A. D. Willis :— lt is rumoured that, in the days of his novitiate he had once some wild ideas about political independence, but was waylaid in the lobby by Messrs Seddon and " Jock " McKenzie. They looked so big and talked so truculently that the small gentleman, who, at the best, is not a bellicose person, was cowed into subjection, where he will possibly remain uulil independence becomes as much the sentiment of the majority as blind grovel is at present.
A unmber of graziers in New South Wales have determined to make a thorough trial of the shipping of live cattle to the English market. If the Queensland breeders from whom they buy store cattle will deliver 1000 steers to their paddocks near Newcastle they will secure one of the finest boats in the Trans-Atlantic cattle trade, and make shipments at their own risK and expense.
In a letter from Messrs Chapman & Co. to the Wirokino Road Board re Wood v. Board they say they had at last managed to have the question of costs settled by the Chief Justice, who decided that the plaintiff is entitled to costs on the Supreme Court Scale with allowance of the extra days of trial.
Mr John Scott, of Icvercargill, an old flax-miller, is (according to the Southland Nnr«) an applicant for the Government bonus for utilising the waste products of the phormium tenax. The waste is reduced to powder, and this applied either dry or in a liquid infusion, is stated to posses rare healing properties for wound 3 or burns, while taken internally, it acts as a tonic, and has been found very beneficial in cases of sickness. A remarkable feature of the preparation is its preservative qualities. A kitten that had been placed in a solution of the powder for forty-five days has now been sixty five days exposed to all weathers without any sign of putrefaction. Mr Scott has patented his process.
The Bank of New South Wales, the Bank of Australasia, and the Union Bank of Australia have reduced the rate of interest for twelve months' deposits to 4 per cent., and for six months to 2.J per cent. The Bank 0; New Zealand has reduced its rates § per cent all round.
