Notes and Events.

• What possessed the deserted woman, love or hatred? Ab Marl-borough-street, a woman made an application to Mr Hannay for assistance in obtaining possession of her husband's body. Her husband, she said, left her about 17 years ago and went to live with another woman. In the course of the past week he died, and when she heard the news she called at the house where he had been living and claimed the body, considering that as the lawful wife she had a right to it. The woman whe had supplanted her, however, refused to surrender the corpse. — Mr Hannay said that he never had such an application made to him before. He was disposed to help the woman if he could, but ho knew of no law which gave him power to do so. He could only suggest that she should go and take the body. The applicant departed, but later in the day a young man, who said he was her son, came to know if he rightly understood that he was to gain possession of the body by force.— Mr Hannay repeated that he regretted that the law gave him no power to interfere in the matter. The son subsequently returned and informed the magistrate that he had called at the house with a policeconstable, but was not admitted. A disturbance was created outside by the partisans of the woman in possession of the corpse, and three' policemen had to be fetched to restore order. — Mr Hannay asked if it was really worth while to carry a matter of sentiment so far. He j suggested that as such strong opposition was shown them they should let the corpse be quietly buried by the person in possession ot it. The young man left the court apparently 1 much dissatisfied.
