Trouble at Levin.
• A Native difficulty has unexpectedly arisen in connection with the land on the Horowhenua Block. On Thursday morning Mr Jam^s Mackay, of the Labour Bureau, lift Wellington by train lor the farm, in charge of a small party of labourer.-!, who were engaged to d : g a well, pub up the necessary fencing, and clear a site for buildings, with a view to operations being started on the farm. Mr Maekay was turned off by a party of about 20 Natives, who represented that the land was not yet in possession of the Government, and that a caveat hid been lodged on their behalf by W. B. Edwards, barrister and solicitor, of Wellington. The Natives did not resort to any acts of violence, but they prevented the erection of the tents which the labourers had brought with them. Oa receiving news of the trouble with the Natives, Ministers decided to take immediate steps to euppori Mr Mackay in carrying out th.' mission upon which he had b.^eu d : spatched. Col >nel Hume was accordingly communicated with and instructed to adopt the necessary means to prevent any further molestation. Colonel Hume accordingly in structed Inspector Pender to proceed \ to Levin this morning with eight constables armed with batons. They will be accompanied by an interpreter. Backed up by this force, the labourers in charge of Mr Mackay will proceed with their work.
