Details of the disaster in Matabeleland to Captain Wilson's detachment are now to hand.
They show that after King Lobengula had sought flight on horseback, the Matabeles again faced their pursuers, who made a gallant stand.
The horses of the British were shot down, and behind these they held the combatants at bay to the last, and used their revolvers with great effect.
Eviden tally the Matabele, who overwhelm d the British in numbers, made a rushing attack, and twins their assegais with deadly effect, killed all the detachment.
Captain Wilson's force consisted of the following : —
Captains Fitzgerald, Judd, Green field, Kit'ton and Barrow.
Lieutenants Hughes and Hofmeyer. Sergeants Harding, Brown, Bradburn and Barkley.
Corporate Kinglock and Colquhoun. Troopers Welby (2), Robertson. Hellett. Dillon, Money, Vogel (son of Sir Julius Vogel), Lewis, Devoi, Watson, Brock, Britton, Bath, Nunn. Thompson, Abbot, Mackenzie and Meiklejohn. Further information from Matabeleland states that the Matabele at Inyoya have murdered white travellers from Zambesi.
Major Forbes has been found guilty of incapacity, and has been superseded in command at Buluwayo.
The Court of Inquiry set up to j investigate the shooting of two of j King Lobengula'3 envoys at Tati j have acquitted all concerned from i blame. The Court; attributed the shooting to the omission of Mr Dawflon (the Buluwayo trader who accompanied the envoys), to inform the officials of the status of the victims. Heavy fighting has taken place in Nyassaland between the British and the natives, and Commissioner Johnston has inflicted a severe defeat on the forces of the slave chief Makanjiru. experienced over the fight between Mitchell and Corbett for £4000, arranged to take place on the stage of the Duval Athletic Club, at Jacksonville, Florida, on the 25th January, The sheriff, in obedience to instructions, has threatened to proclaim martial law, in order to prevent the contest being carried out ; but tho local militia have intimated that they will refuse to obev the Governor's orders.
