Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, JULY 4, 1898.
We beg to acknowledge the receipt of the : Statistics of the Colony for 1892. It is a most interesting document full of figures, but from which very much can be gleaned. We shall, from time to time, cull some items therefrom which will surprise many. The Blue Book gives the Governors, the dates of their appointments and also all the parliaments since the passing of the Constitution Act with the names of all th« Ministries. It is a compilation most useful for reference. We are obliged by the July time-table of the N.Z. Eailways, received from the Wanganui Traffic Agent's Office. " "When you are ready to plant," says a correspondent of the Practical Farmer, L.S.A., put your corn in a sack, hang it in a smoke house, or any close place, and give it a thorough smoking. I tried it last season on a lot which I had been forced to abandon because of the ravages of moles and chipmunks. I planted this lot, and so far as I could judge, not a single kernel was disturbed. Our sandy soil is the natural home for the cutworm, and they seldom fail to do a deal of damage, but in this lot which was planted with seed which had been smoked, they did no damage whatever, while the corn which was planted without smoking on adjacent ground was badly damaged." The Hawke's Bay Suvuhl warns farmers against purchasing clover seed from Canterbury, where, says the Herald, large quantities have been threshed from land "jfested with the Californian thistle. At a great function at the Brompton Oratory, the English Roman Catholics adopted St Peter as their patron saint. A White Star liner, named the Gothic, of 8000 tons, has been launched at Belfast.
