In the House of Commons, the betterment clause in tha London Improvements Bill was carried by a majority of 98.
At the election for the Pontefract seat — rendered vacant by the unseating of Mr Reckitt, who had been returned on tha elevation of the Hon R. "Winn (?) to the peerage — Mr Missery, the Home Rule candidate, defeated Mr Lees, Conservative, by 32 votes.
John Deasy, Nationalist member for West Mayo, is being sued by his servant for an assault in Pimlico. The charge at first was one of common assault, but by the advice of counsel, was changed to an indecent assault. It is alleged that his landlady had to interpose.
In the House of Commons Sir Henry James has given notice of an amendment to the Home Rule Bill postponing the creation of the Irish Executive for six years.
Mr Thomas W. Russell, member for Tyrone South, has given notice
the Parnell Commission, convicted of being connected with the Plan of Campaign, or a refugee from justice, from sewing on the Irish Executive. The Standard asserts that if Mr Gladstone has resolved to adopt the closure with regard to the Home Rule Bill the Unionists will compel him to dissolve Parliament. Mr Abraham has been elected unopposed for North-East Cork. ; Mr Gladstone has decided to enforce the closure in regard to four sections of the Home Rule Bill. He expects that the measure will be through committee by the 81st of July. Clauses 5 to 8 inclusive in the Home Rule Bill are to have the closure applied, so that they must be passed by the 6th July. Clauses 9 to 26 are to be disposed of by July 18th, clauses 27 to 40 by July 20th, and the remainder by July 27th. Dr Common, a Healyite, has been elected for South.East Cork. The Standard says Mr T. W. Russell will propose an amendment inviting Parliament to refuse to interfere with the free discussion of the Home Rale Bill. • The Opposition declare they will restore the closured amendments when the reporting stage of the Bill is reached. The Radical papers are confident that the tactics of the Government will succeed. The Unionists taunt the Government with resorting to brute force. Mr F. G. Banbury, M.P. for Peckham, moved an amendment withholding from the Irish Parliament the control of land and sea forces. Mr Gladstone urged that the proposal was directly opposed to sound policy, as it wag necessary the Viceroy should have large powers of control in order to preserve order The amendment was negatived by a majority of 81. The Irish members wildly cheered the Premier's notice to apply the closure to weekly instalments of clauses. Admiral Tryon's cap, telescope and despatch box have been recovered. It is believed at the Admiralty that -the collision was not due to any defect in the machinery, and it is feared that the cause lies in the faulty execution of orders.
Captain Bourke will be tried by a court-martial at Malta for the loss of the Victoria.
The Lord Mayor's relief fund has reached £15,000.
