Mr Gladstone made a vehement) attack on Mr Chamberlain for accusing the Government of withholding an adequate description of their policy. He declared that he had given a full and explicit explanation in proportion to the stage the Bill had reached. Much angry feeling was displayed, and the evening was wasted. Two men have been arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the explosion at the Dublin Law Courts. A great nlast warehouse in Hull has been burned down. The fire was the work of incendiaries. In committee on the Irish Home Rule Bill, clause one, providing for a Legislature in Ireland consisting of Her Majesty the Queen and two Houses — Legislative Council and Legislative Assembly — was passed on a division, by a majority of forty* two. The discussion on .this clause has lasted the greater part of a week. An unusual scene occurred in the House of Commons on Friday night. In the course of the proceedings Mr Vicary Gibbs, member for St Albans, accused Mr J. G. McNeil, member for South Donegal, of interjecting, during a speech by Mr Gibbs, the remark, * What the — — . is he talking about ?' Mr McNeil denied the charge, whereupon Mr W. G. Macartney, member for South Antrim, attributed the remark to Mr SextoD, who also indignantly repudiated the accusation. Uproar ensued, and order was restored only when the gentlemen who had made the allegations apologised and with • drew their statements. The dispute between the dockers and the shipowners at Hull has been settled. The dockers have agreed to allow the employment of either unionists or non-unionists, which virtually gives the terms asked by the Shipping Federation. Seven small brokers on the Exchange have suspended payment owing to the tightness of the money market. Two thousand carcases of frozen meat — a portion of the cargo of the s.s. Hawkes Bay, which left Wellington on March 13th — has been condemned. The bad state of the meat was caused through water getting into the hold of the vessel. The New Zealand Loan and Mer-

cantile Agency Company received the following advice by cable from its London office on Saturday : — Frozen meats— Market quiet. Prime New Zealand lambs are worth, per carcase, s £d per lb ; other quotations unchanged since last telegram. Tallow— There is a good demand. Fine mutton is worth 88s per cwt ; good beef is worth 80s per cwt ; edible mutton and bsef have advanced 8s per cwt since last report. A cargo of New Zealand wheat has been sold at 27s 9d.
