EARLY-CLOSING.
TO THE KDrTOtt Of Tlffl MAXAWATC HEIIATiD. Sin,— Not very long ago the writer noticed an advertisement in the Manav.atu Her.ild signed by all the leading storekeepers, grocers, drapers, shoemakers, tailors, etc., scaling that after a certain date (I think it was early in April) thehpremises would be closed from six o'clock in the evening, also on Tuesday afternoons. Now, sir, this same arrangement was* carried out successfully for may years previously, and the assistants could enjoy themselves with their friends after these hours. It is a pity to see the " small fry " keeping their " lights trimmed and burning " nearly every evening, leading the public to think they are only pretending to he closed, when the assistants or apprentices know (?) that their employers are " honorable men." The opinion of some of the larger employers is that a Vigilance Committee should be formed among the employes to try and induce theue pretenders to act according to their promise, otherwise the more honorable will bo compelled to take stepg to protect themselves. Should anyone feel disposed to find out who the offenders are, they might look any evening and see the lights burning in the (shops, when according to promise, they should be out. I am, &c, Short Hours.
