♦— .. . NOVEMBER lOrn 1890. The day opened with the usual heavy nor- wester, whbh greatly marred the day's enjoyment, both for spectators and competitors. The committee chose the down rives course — from the Maori pah tc the lower end of of the wharf Great praise is due to Messrs Hun ter, P. Curtis and Cook of the committee, and also to Mr Russell (who acted as judge), for tho manner in which they discharged theii arduous duties. Mr Hunter gave every satisfaction a- starter Appended are the remits : — Open pair-oared handicap — First prize, half dozen wine; Second piize, coffee pot, ami pipe. F. Curtis and C. Symons, (Rata) scr. . . . . ... 1 Potter and Cowles, (Nikau) scr. . . . . . . 2 McPhuu and Shadbolt, (Queen of the South) 10 sees. Fairbank and McGuinness, (Fry's) 50 sees, also competed. „ This race wan a seriei of accidents owing to the wind and lumpy water, shortly after the start the Rata and Nikau came together, and lost some few seconds, they however got away and soon made up lost ground, on rounding the point the Eata touched the Queen, and unshipped her tiller ; by this time the Nikiiu had gained a lead of three lengths, but the wind drove the Queen on h«r bows and allowed the Rata to win by four lengths. A, protest was entered by the Queen against the Eata and was afterwards withdrawn. The second item on the programme, was a Maori canoe race, but owing to the lumpy state of the waterthis was abandoned and another open pair oared races substituted : First prize, half ton potatoes. Second prize, lamb and tongue. Potter and Cowles, (Nikau) acr. 1 F. Curtis and C, Symons, (Eata) scr. 2 Fairbank and Popplewoll, (Fry's) 50 sees, Mundlo and McPhun, also competed. I This was a good race between the Nikau and Eata, the former winning by thres lengths. The Queen had the misfortune to break an oar which put them out of the race, Married v. Single. — First prize, pair jerwTs.

(Rata) . . 2 This was a splendid race t» the point when the singles drew ahead and won by three lengths, culling Handicap. — First pr zt, pair of tivnisera. Second prize, pair spur--. Five entries. First Heat. Fairbank, (Fry') GO sees .. * F. Cur is, (Rata) scr 2 Syni"ns (Nikaii) 25 sees. . . 3 Curtis pulled up wt4l, but the h.m iicap was t.oj much for the distance. Fairbank winning by a length and a half. Second Heat. Cowles, sci 1 . (Nikau) . . „ 1 Potter, 5 sec. (Jftata) . . . . 2 The wind caused great commotion in this race, but as Cowles had the better water he managed to pass the post first. Final Heat. Fairbank (Fry's) 60 sees, . . 1 Cowles, scr. (Nikau) . . . . 2 Fairbank won easily, as two sculling races one after the other seemed too much for the other man. Owing to the weather the Ladies Race and Maori v. Pakeha canoe race were postponed to some future date not yefc decided.
