Manawatu Herald. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 1890.

Mr Wilson's Retirement. . —^ The deci»ion that Mr Wilson has come to, ta retire from the representation of this dis rict, is a surprise to a good many. A week or fo ago w reported that he had to leave Wellington for a time on account of hi-* health, but we had no idea that this wou'd deve'ope into anything so serious aa to make him take the step he has done All will hearu'y re ret the cause and even his op-po-en's wil. miss him in his political duMes, ns Mr Wilson was most popular with both friend and opponent—we do not say foe as he ae'erlmd cne. As the reason assigned for his retirement is beyond the power of the electors to remedy, we think that Mr Wilson is right in deciding not to

contest the s*'at, as undoubted y th** contest will be bar I and warm and (he candidate must be braced to the hard work in prospect. Wo have frequently pointed out how well Mr Wilson has ac ed in matters which have been brought under his notice, and thought wfc may feel that this support of the Government this session needs some explanation after h*s public'y o pressnd op-uion of tliPm, wo learn of his refiromc-Jt with real f c ings of regret. We sco by our pxehano-es that an effort will be made to dissuade Mr Wilson from his decision, his supporters thinking that they cou d secure his return without his assistance. They might do so, but we confess to a great doubt upon the matter, as Mr Wilson is a vast power in personal canvassing which must be reckoned with, and which is the very duty he feels unable to attend to. * It will be for the electors to move quickly in the matter of securing a successor to th' ir representative, as we feel sure, Mr Wilson will not reconsider his decision.
