T <c Jane Douglas arrived from Wellington on Tuesday morning, and left again the same evening. The steam rs Tui and Jane Douglas will probably arrive from Wellington today, and the Stormbird tomorrow. The Emerald sailed over the bar on Tuesday, with a cargo of timber for Napier. An inexplicable circumstance (says the South Australian Advertiser) oocurred on May 1, when the Orient steamer Potosi wasinlat 43.30 south, long. 07.13 east. She sighted a large French transport ship, and oiT getting within signalling distance the latter set the flags indicating " Seropis totally lost;" a»d " Look out for wreckage or raft." Captain Darley kept out of his course to bear down on the vessel. Owing, j however, to the heavy sea he was unable to get within hailing distance. The French- { men then 'set the signal "Sage of Tene-; riffe." No further communication took j place, but what transpires certainly points to some shipping casualty. It cannot well have reference to the Queen's ship Serapis, as she was in London when the Potosi left. There was a vessel here of that name some few months back, but until - there is some further information to hand it would be wild to speculate upon the matter.
