THE RAILWAY RETURNS.
Tbe returns for the four weeks ending January 8 are published, and show a total revenue for the month of £68,942, or at the rate of £827,804 per annum. The expenditure during the four weeks was £85,815, or at the rate of £428,780 per annum. The average per cent, of receipts to date is 64*56. During the month 14,918 passengers travelled on the Foxton line, being about 1,700 less than during the same period of the previous year. There was an improvement in the goods class, about 800 tons more being carried this year than last. The increase however, was more than made up by "'minerals," there being nearly 700 tons carried this year against only 18 last. As the minerals referred to were probably largely made up of
coal for railway purposes, which, although entered as paying for haul- , age do not contribute anything to tbe actual revenue, it will be sten fiat the revenue is not increasn g, notwithstanding that the Ihi2 is about ', 1 3 miles longer now than it wa^: »it the beginning of 1880. The receipts sire stated at £3,093, as against. £2,902 for the same" month of last year. The per centage of receipts to date is b'B 2<» upon the local line. The Napier line shows an improvement on this,- the per centage being 64-92, whilst the little Whangarei - Kamo line shows 50*94.
