RAILWAY ACCIDENT LAST NiGHT.
Last night, ahout 5 minutes after the down train left Palmerston, the driver noticed an object on the line, but before the train could be stopped, it wrs run into, and proved to be a man on horseback. The horse appears to have been either standing or walking with its back to the approaching train, when it was overtaken. The horse was struck by the coupler, and an enormous wound inflicted. It appeared to have died instantaneously. The rider then feil back upon the engine, striking and breaking the lamp and falling to the ground. By this time the train had been stopped, and it was then discovered the injured man was a well known settler at Awapuni named Patrick Maxwell, who had visited Foxton yesterday, and returned to Palmerston by the evening train. He had three contused wounds on the head — one in front, one at the back, and one at the side. He was at onco placed in the brake van and taken
back to Palmerston, where he received medical attention. His injuries are veiy serious, and his life was despaired of by the train officials.
