(from our own correspondent.) Wellington, Thursday, 7 p.m. The Civil Service Commission met to-day, Mr Saunders acting as chairman temporarily. Yorke, late editor of the Times, was appointed secretary, and Parkinson, reporter. Mr Undersecretary Cooper attended, and gave evidence. It is rumored the railway commissioners and Government both desire to get Thomas Higginbottom, late Engiueer-in-Chief, Victoria, to act as member of the Commission. The Post warmly supports the idea. The midday goods train at Ashburtou, Christchurch, yesterday ran off the lino at temporary siding near Rakaia. Nine trucks capsized, the engine burying itself up to axles. The express was delayed two hours waiting for the line to be cleared. Guthrie and Larnach's large saw mills near Invercargill were burned down this morning. Insurances far as known, amount to £4,500 in various offices.
