A REMARKABLE MAN
The O'Gorman Mahon, who has just been returned for co. Clare as a Home Ruler, when pitted against a popular Conservative candidate and a Wing barrister of some local influence, is a rather remarkable man. His father waß"out" wi'h the robels in '98, and he himself is nearly 80 years of age, though he is as vigor. >v* in mind and body as many half his age. He was one of the founders of the Catholic Association in 1824, and four years later took a verj active part in the election of O'Connel for Clare. In 1830 he was elected for the same county, and in 1847 he was returned for Ennis. He has been out of Parliament for more than 20 years, during which he has led a chequered life. He lived a long while in France, and afterwards in Chili and Pern, where he rose to positions of influence, having been for some time tho Chief of the Peruvian aimy and navy. His hairbreadth escapes would make half a dozen excMiu novels. B c has fought 1 9 duels, and been engaged in hazardous military and political enterprises. There is onlj one other member of the present House was elected in 1830, and that is Mr R. Tilbot, who has sat UDinterruptedly since that time for Glamorganshire. His life, however, has been much less eventful than that of his Irish colleague.
