OTAKI WORKING MENS'CLUB.
TO THE KT'ITOR OF TUB MANAWATU HERAr.D. Sir — Through the medium of your valuable paper, will you kindly oblige me with a solution of the following difficulty : — I was a member of the Otaki Working Men's Club, and, sis such, wont to a great deal of trouble to make the thing a success. Owing to Mr Langley being i-ouvicted of sly-grog selling, the Olnb was suspended for reorganisation, Since that time there his been no regular Club meeting held, and I imagine the Club is non-exu:ent. The Secretary holds the moneys of the Club, and refuses to give up the books or permit any one to audit them. I might state the former President and Treasurer, and the present President and Treasurer (if the CT.ib is in existence], and the Steward, all have the moneys belonging to the (Jlub in hand, which I might roughly estimato at between twenty and thirty pounds ; and an wo are building a new school, I humbly suggest the suvplus fund 3 of the Club should be applied towards the erection of tho new School. I'eoling sure your opinion will be reliable , you will oblige by inserting the abovo at youi 1 eailiest convenience. I am, &c, Enquirer. Otaki, July 23, 1579. [Our correspondent is inconsistent. In one sentence he states the Secretary holds the Club's monies in hand, and in the next he sates the former President and Treasurer, and tlio present President and Treasurer, with the Steward, hold the Club's bul inca. The courso we would suggest is as follows : — Let a meeting be called of all who were members of the Club when its operations were suspended ; a statement of accounts could then be demanded upon rasolution ; if this statement were not givon, legal proceedings could then bo taken to recover the amount. In any case, a distinct vote of a duly advertised meeting would bs necessary bofore the bal.mce could be hand.'d over to tin school fund. The proposal, however, is an exceedingly good one. The money could not be devoted to a better purpose, and from tho way the Club has baeu onrried on for somo mouths past we think it desirable the whole aff iir should bo wound up. anJ, if necessary, re-estab lishe I on a sounder footing. — Ed.
