OTAKI HIGHWAYS BOARD.
A meeting of this Board was held on 21st July, 1879. Present— Messrs W. il. Sioicox, (Chairman), A. J. Hadtield, J. Kobbell, J. Davies, J. x McOrae, W. Udy, and Dr. Hewson. J T lie minutes of previous meeting were read and confirmed. Letter read from Treasurer to Chairman of the Manawatu Highways Board re amount still due to Otaki Board. Report of River Road Committee read, follows :— We your Road Oonv>
nrittee have the honor to state that in accordance -with a resolution .of the Board, we have enquired into the stoppage of old roadway from Raukawa Pah corner to the Otaki .ri-Ter, and we find that Mr Small and •^%k«i natives are willing to hand over to the Board sufficient for the road, provided it runs in the position shown in the accompanying plan. We suggest that the offer be accepted, all old roadways leading from the township to the river having been included in different sections, and Crown Granted, and there being no other means of securing a road to the river except by purchasing the neoessary land at a great cost.— A. J. Hadfield, Chairman Road Committee. Proposed by Mr Kebbell, seconded by Mr Davies, and carried, "That the report of the Committee appointed to enquire into a road from Raukawa Pah corner to the Otaki river be adopted." Proposed by Mr Hadfield, seconded by Dr. Hewson, " That the report of the Road Committee, dated 10th July, 1879, be adopted, and that a notice be sent to Mr Greenough to abate the nuisance complained of within fourteen days from date, 21st JuJy, 1879." Carried. Proposed by Mr Kebbell, seconded by Mr Davies, " That the Chairman and Mr McCrae do meet the County Engineer on his next visit to Otaki, j and consult about the drain on the aide of the road leading from the main road to Mr Death's property, as to whether the forming of said drain is a work that should be done by the County Council and Hoad Board combined." After some discussion this resolution wae negatived. Proposed by MrHadfield, seconded by Dr. Hewson. and carried, " That Mr Kebbell be requested to ask the Council at its next meeting to make proper arrangements for carrying off the drainage from the County Koad, by the Telegraph Hotel, Otaki " Proposed by Mr Kebbell, seconded by Mr Hadfield, and carried, " That Mr Davies be requested to call at the Bank of New Zealand, and arrange about interest on money lying in the Bank." Proposed by Mr McOrae, seconded by Dr. Hewson, ''That the Chairman, Dr. Hewson, and Mr Hadfield, be a Committee to call for tenders for formation of any portion of the road leading from Raukawa Pah to the Otaki River." Carried. The following accounts were passed for payment : — Government Storekeeper, 8s 9d ; James Smith, 8s 9d ; James Smith, 3s 6d; Fredrick Bright, £3 10s Od. The next meeting of the Board will take place on Monday, August, %25, at 2 o'clock p m.
