The Captain and Agent of the Jane Douglas called at uur olfico lusb evening and complained that yesterday the Foxton wharfinger, acting uud?.i orders trom the General Manager, rofused to give any assistance in the unloading of three trucks ot timber which wero run down alongside the vessel for shipment to Lytteiton, unless the charge of 3d. per hundred feet for unloading was paid. Captain Fraser states that hitherto the general rule has been to give the assistance of either one or two men, where the ship's crew were unloading, the cost being covered by wharfage. He also states that ab the Lyttelton railway wharf, two me a are always ready to assist at each truck, the wharf .ge covering the cost. In the present case, the Jaue Douglas was de> tamed a day in order to take the totara to Lyttelton, and both captain and agent are naturally incensed that through a new rule (and what they considei an unjust one) being inaugurated, the time of the steamer is lost, and the interests of the sawmillers sacrificed. The matter is one of im* portance to the district. The rule of which Captain Fraser complains means the increase of the wharfage to 6d per hundred feet, unless the crew of the steamer happens to be large enough to unload the timber ; and considering the present depressed price of timber, and the fact that trade between this I
port and Lytielton .s j apicHy growing, it i& tr> be rog'-etteel tnafc juiything ntliti L :ud uieationccl shoud have ojw curbed.
