Manamatu Herald. TUESDAY. JUNE 17, 1879. BONDED STORE WANTED.

■ : — ♦— ■ Now that Foxton is a Port of Entry, we trust no time will be lost on the part of the local merchants in haying at least one bonded store gazetted. We may explain that before any building is so proclaimed, it must be passed by the Commissioner of Customs. The regulations, however, are not stringent. A new building is not necessary. The two conditions are tha*; the building should be substantial, and of easy access. A building ov store would be considered suitable, we believe, if only a part were strongly partitioned off. There should consequently be no difficulty in a bonded store being obtained for the port. If there is a difficulty in the matter, and no one comes forward to provide a bonded store, we say it will be an uiter and standing disgrace to the people of Foxton. There is every probability that many of the storekeepers in Upper Manawatu will avail themselves of the opportunity of a bonded store at Foxton to leave their goods in bond until required for consumption. Spirits, for example, pay a duty of 12s per gallon. This far exceeds the original cost of several classes. \i a merchant or hotelkeeper, for instance, has 500 gallons of spirits in stock he can leave almost the whole of it • in bond, and telegraph to Foxton for supplies as he requires them, when it would of course be taken out of bond, and the duty paid He thus would save the interest on the duty until the article was actually required for con- ! sumption. Regarding the charges, we may explain that the owner of the bonded store charges rent to those who use it. In this the Government in no way interfere. The scale of prices in large towns is fixed by the 1 local Chamber of Commerce, and it ia the custom in smaller places, like Foxton, for the scale of charges levied

to be regulated by those in force say at Wellington We have given the above information, on the subject, in the hope that it will clear away some of the errors which we believe exist at present on the subject ia the minds of those interested.
