Passengers : <'übin -Messrs sievwright, Skelly, Russell, Evans, and Price ; 5 steerage. Thynne, Linton & Co, agents. The ss Huia left. Wellington on Friday last at 6 p.m. for this port; after rounding Terawiti experienced strong N.N.E wind, accompanied by heavy rain, and heavy head sea. This delayed the vessel's arrival off the Manawatu bar, which she did not reach till 8 o'clock on Saturday morning — about half ebb tide. However, the signal to take the bar was run up, and Captain Wills immediately headed his steamer for the chan« nel. The bar was crossed safely, but the steamer touched on a flat which had been silted up (through the continuance of the fine easterly weather), and hung for a moment, when the ebb tide caught her bow, and swung her head right round on to the south spit. It was at onoe evident that there was no prospect of her coming off that tide, and soon afterwards Pilot Sea~ bury and his, assistant boarded the vessel, and an anchor was run out astern, with the idea of kedgiag her off next tide. Unfortunately, the tides were dead neap at the time, and the steamer was reavily laden with rails and general cargo, so the attempt was not successful. No other course was open but to wait a day or twpifor. the tides to make, vigorous efforts being made. each time at high water to place Har nearer the channel.'
