The deaths were 290, compared with 333 in 1877. Marriages were 348, against 268 fn 1877. Largest number of births cvor recordod in Wellington in one month, were last month, 1 1 3. Sail'd— Jane Douglas for Foxtou at 4 p.m. FusseD-rora, Messrs Euglis, Farrand, (2), Conr.id, Holme 3, Mrs and Miis Molfdtt, aud family, Mr MucNamaru, Mrs aud Miss Young. The committals to Wellington Gaol were during the year 1878, 400, as aguiust 600 in tho previous year. It is reported that a man named M off at, who has been living with natives in Wairarapa for many years pant, will apply for an injunction from the Supreme Court to prevent tho sale of tho Thorndm llecluimod Land. Moffatt bases his claims on certain Crown Grants, da ing, he says, as far back as 1839, and that ho is acting throughout on high legal advice.
