OTAKI NEWS.
An esteemed correspondent at Otaki sends us the following :— Referring to the excitement on the City of Auckland after she struck, our correspondent toys that on a trying occasion issr this, the qualities of Captain Kails would -receive the severest test, and it is recorded t»-hja—^ honor that he retained great presence : of mind and firmness of purpose To these qualities the great success of the subsequent disembarkation w&h mainly due. With revolver in hand he firmly checked any irregula* movement.
The stranding of three vessels on the West Coast Beach, points to
gravo defects in the lighthouse arrangeiubnts. The old hands believe that no bettor site could bo fixed on for a lighthouse, than tho north side of fitft island of Kapiti. Its siiuatio^s very prominent. It is usually flew f i om fog-, and the light would; be visible off Wanganui. That it i. would be more useful than a light on Stephens Island is evident. The Southern -cliffs of Kapiti aro constantly enveloped in cloud, and Mana cannot assist vessels from the N.W. The lighthouse on The Brothers, at the entrance of the Sound,is of great value in directing vessels into the line of Cook's Straits.
