The Co»;xtv Election. — Tho various candidates are vigorously canvassing for support, and considerable interest is taken in the contest. ' Party feeling is tolerably warm, but we anticipate a victory will be gained by Messrs Thynne and Dawson. We observe these gentlemen intend to hold a meeting this day week, in thp Public Hall.
Coach Delayed. — Wednesday's upward coach did not reach Foxton until 7 a.m. yosterday. The Otaki river had a tremendous fresh in it all day, and tho whole flat near tho beach was covered with water. Otto llasse was driving the up-coach, and was detained on the south bank, whilst Pugsley, with the down coach, was detained in the township of Ohiki. About G p.nv the flood wont down, aud Otto was ablo to cross, ineetiug Pugsley at tho Otaki township. The two coaches remained at Bright'a hotel for tho evening, and about 4 o'clock yesterday morning a start was made, Otto reaching Foxton in time to catch the early
traiu.
Pastoral News. — Wo understand that owing to tho past season being so wet and cold, Messrs Barber have only had 100 per cent of increase from their flock of Romncy Marsh ewes ' at Motoa. However throughout the whole Manawatu district the lambs are looking very healthy, and a good addition will be made this season to the pastoral wealth of tho settlers.
The Wukck. — Early yesterday morning Constable Purcell received a letter from the Hon. Mr Sheehan, stating that the Government intended to send tho immigrants overland to Foxton.whore they would be shipped per Tui and Jano Douglas, and asking Avhether any vehicles were available. Mr Purcell at once replied that a large number of vehicles could be obtained. Mr Sheehan, at a later period of the day, telegraphed that tha intention had been altered, and that tho immigrants would bo taken overland to Wuikanae, whore the Government steam.'r Ilinemoa was anchored under lee of Kapiti, and would be taken by ho" to Wellington. Our late ti-lcgrains announce that they havo started for Waikanae. Upon arrival at Wellington, they will be allowed to elect whether they will remain there, or go on to Napier.
The Felix Stow£. — Tho Felix Stowo is rapidly breaking up, and largo quantities of the coals with which shu was ludeu, are strewed along the beach.

Romas Catholic Citjrcii. — Tho new Roman Catholic Church at Palmerston (St. Patrick's), will be solemnly dedicated on Sunday next by his Lordship Bishop Redwood, of Wellington. To enable residents of the whole district to attend the services, Mr Rotherham has with a comnwndable regard for public convenience, put a sprcial train upon the line for the day ; this will run from both termini to Palmerston. After tho consecration services are concluded, Father Heuneberry will inaugurate a week of mission services.
The Australian Cmcketeus. — When the Australian cricketers left England, this was their programme for their tour through America, as given in tho English papery : They will play the St. George's Club, Now York, on the Ist and 2ud October; the Germanton Club, Philadelphia, on the 3rd, 4th und sth ; at Toronto, 7th and Bth ; Detroit 9th and 10th ; Chicago, 12th and 14th ; St. Louis lGth and 17th. They will perhaps, make one day's halt at Salt bake City, aud finish up at San Francisco on the 24th, 25;h, and 2oth. They expect to leave for Auatralid on the 28th Octoher, and by thtit timo they will havo traveled some 60,000 mi!es during thoir trip. Tho balance of the money over from their banquet, amounting to .£BO, is to be used in getting gold lockets as souvenirs of tho trip to Kuglund.
The Public Wousa. — Tho Hon. Mr Macandrew stated on Tuesday night that the Government proposed to ask for tho fol> lowing appropriations for Public Works during tho next six years: — In the first year £180,000 would be speu t in addition to tho amount now set down on the e.stimates; second year, £510,000; third year, £585,000; fourth year, £90i,0Q0; fifth year, £680,000 ; sixth year, i' 670,000.
Thb Wellington Thamway. — The Wei. Uington Tramway has a great number of enemies. The foreman of the Tramway Company on Tuesday morning discovered a blackguardly attempt to throw tho eugino and cars oft* the line. In going over the line the foreman discovered a piece of inch and a-half iron water-pipe firmly embedded in the rail, about half-way down Mannersstreet, — a patent attempt to throw th e engine and cars off.
