OUR POLICE OFFICER.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE 3IAXAWATU UEKALD. Sift— la your issue of the 15th. inst there appeai'ed two letters, signed respectively " Ratepayer," and "One who was Asked to Sign "; and wit lithe contempt they deserve I treat them, liut as they have both used the plural term, instead of the siugular, I am j bound to say something; and if " Ratepayer" w v usj.^o^a sneak himself, he | would noVl&vsiieakiug his nose in, | where his par^oti was not invited. I do not fear Wse interviewed by our j unworthy. My little games are hon- ! est ones. Who dare to gainsay it ? " One who was Asked to Sign" says the names are seedy looking. They are acorns, and very probably will grow to a sturdy oak. Who would j wish to be hail felloe well mef with !a policeman? A gentlemali would j not j therefore I always keep him at his proper distance. Who said Ai^B Purcell had served us for fourteeff^ years ? Those who did cared but little what they said. I say he has not. If these two writers will insert these letters again and sign their full uamea to them, I will be only too glad to i answer them more fully. When | they write again, let them speak j the truth, and if they cau'fc, hold : their peace for over. 1 must apolo- ; gise for taking up too much of your j valuable space, but please insert the ! whole and oblige me. Try me again. i I am, &c, j Gr. Memdery. 1-Vxton, October 17, 1878.
