"Tf any reliance can be placed upon wlmt newspapers say," said Mr Rockstrow yesterday morning, at the Railway meeting, in reference to a report which appeared in the last issue of the Manawatu Herald regarding Mr Dawson's visit to Wellington, and the promise of the Government to work the line. We accept the sneer for what it is worth, which is but little. We have no doubt Mr Rockstrow would be veiy glad if there were no such things in the world as newspapers, to criticise men of his stamp, aud on pur pait we are heartily glad there are very few such meddlesome, quacking bores as he is. If there were many such, newspaper repotting would be intolerable. We have already shown Mr llockstrow's utter incompetence for the position of Cot oner, and ii is a disgrace chat he is allowed to hold the position, after the lamentable exhibition he has made in the recent manslaughter case. He is everlastingly pushing himself to the fronc in public matters, only to show his puerility and ignorance, notwithstanding the fuss and splutter he in variably makes ; and his highest attempts as a would "be public mau, always result in an' absurd iarce wit* nessed with mingled pity and contempt by the people. We shall con* tiuue to do our duty to the public, giv ing leliaUe information in the future as we have done in the past, and we would point out to Mr Rockstrow that it is dangerous to sneer at newspapers. Hitting from the shoulder is manly, but striking in the back is only the act of a meau and despicable coward. If Mr Rockstrow wishes to question the information we give let him do so, and we will answer him. In the present case, we have the Government letter to back up our report.
