THE NEW TAX ES

The whole of the Schedule of the new Customs Tariff Bill has been passed by the Lower Mouse. The duty on grain has been repealed, also the duty ou timber. Considerable discussion, arose in tho House from the proposed repeal of tho duty i a\po3od on grain. It is alleged that a kind of compact was made between the North and Middle Islands, when the duty was first imposed on grain, by an agreement that a duty at the sauio time should be placed on timber; the object of the so-called compact being to afford protection to the Southern grain grower, and the kauri industry in tho North Island. It was contended that the imposition of these duties being {simultaneous, their toirn of duration should be co existent.
