THE MANAWATU HERALD. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 1878.
showing4he best route to Palmerston as \vjll as Foxloiij and certainly does not seem to have lessoned the difficulties to "be encountered from floods and swamps upon a portion of tho branch ftom the 22 milo peg to Foxton vharf; besides this, it is said that Mr. Stewaiit owns a large area of land in Palmerston. In any case, it will be far better to have a further survey of the country ; but the people of Manawatu. should beware of delaying the -work by local disagreements. We again commend the report to our readers. [Tho above remarks and accompany** ing report, were unavoidably crowded oat of last issue.]
Foxton School Committee. — A special meeting of the Foxton School Committee was held at Whyte's Hotel, yesterday, at 4.30 p.m. A ll the members "were present. The Chairman explained tho object of the meeting to be, to arrange for anothtr building in -which to hold tin school, as the doctor had visited and re;: orted strongly against its present unhealthy conditionSeveral children wer« ill, and their parents had been advised to -withdraw them. The school would fall off, if the alteration were not made ; it had already begun to do so. A conversation ensued, and it was resolved that owing to the circumstances just mentioned, tho Committee deemed it desirable that the Public Hall should be rented till the new buildings are complete ; also, that Mr. Whyte's offer of the Public Hall at 30s per week be acoepted ; and that Mr. Hulke be authorised to take the necessary steps to have the school removed. It was resolved to call for tenders for the erection of the new buildings at once. The meeting then adjourned. Courts.— The usual fortnightly sitting of the Eesident Magistrate's Court was helfl at Foxton on Wednesday. The only business was a judgment summons, F. K> Crowther v. W. Moor, claim £2 6s. 9d., which was adjourned for a fortnight. A Court was also appointed to be held at Otaki on Tuesday last, before R. Ward, Esq., R.M., but there was a clean sheet. The Magistrate performed a quantity of official work, in witnessing Native Jsignaturos, and other duties. An Oijject of Chamty. — Tho woman Butt, whose paramoui*, Andrew Burt, died suddenly on Monday last, is a fit object for charity. She came here some three or four weeks ago with Burt, from Feilding, and was confined last Tuesday week, having to depend entirely upon the charity of one or two kindhearted residents for care and attention. The deoease of Burt has left her entirely destitute, with two young children, and oast upon the world. We believe that Mr. A. J. Whyte, who is always ; ready to alleviate distress, hearing of the poor woman's destitution, at once arranged for her board and lodging, paying the amount for one week himself; so that she is at present oared for. The duty of helping the needy devolves upon all, and we ask other residents to assist in this matter. The woman's history may bo a pitiable one • but a sense of humanity and need should override all Pharisaic criticism. Wo are sure this appeal will be enough, and that Foxton residents will at once contribute sufficient, either to keep the- poor woman until she is able to work, or else to send her to any of her friends within reach . Foxton Local Board. — The Foxton Local Board is certainly passing through a greqt number of transitions. How it will eventually appear, is a thing "no fellah can understand." After living ! beyond its allotted period, the Colonial Secretary, by a stroke of the pen, restores it to its pristine youth and vigor. No sooner is this done, than tho Board commits wholesale suicide, but at the fiat ox the ratepayers it " resurrects," only one Gray hair being clipped from the body* and its place supplied by a now one of darker color. Vet, strange to say, no sooner is the Board returned) to life, than the ColonialSccj^^MjggS&Knes it, and oc^tt^flfl^^^^H^^^^^Haccs it in-iho |^^^^^^^^H^^^^^^Kudaltcnt^Ag

The Government sJPamer Ilincmoa conveys them to Lyfctolton upon their holiday. The chaiices'are that many "of tho great :i spout ers," wearied out with the respiration of so much " gas," will sink into the ar*ns of Morpheus, and enjoy that reposo in the railway cars which is denied them at the Empire City. "To sleep;— perchance to dream" of being kicked out of office, or of getting in again ! Let us hoj-e the ears are well-cushioned, and that hon. meinbera will return to work with a will after their jaunt. Phrenology. — Professor Fraser gave a lecture entertainment at the Foxron Public Hall last night, the subject being "Heads and Faces," illustrating in an interesting manner the various means of readin g character. Two we?l-l;nown gentlemen went on to the stage, and had their characters very corrcotly delineated by the lecturer, testifying themselves to the truthfulness of his comments. Police. — Inspector Atohison arrived by yesterday's coach, from Wellington, upon his quarterly tour of inspection. Mail Notice. — The San Francisco mail will close at Foxton at 8.30 p.m. on the 12th, and leaves Wellington at noon on the following Saturday. Maxaavatu Times.— We obserye that a change in the proprietary of the Manawatu Times is announced, Mr. John 8. Dungan, who has acted as Editor of the paper for some months past, announcing that he has purchased the property. "We wish our contemporary all success, and if the yen. ture is, as the proprietor "asserts," purely a private enterprise, " we hope the support he wi" ieceive will leave him no reason to regret the step he has taken." Tortuosity.— Why is the new tax like cremation P — Because it deprives a man of his leer. This is " very hot." Land. — A large sale cf Foxton land is announced in another column by Mr. A. A. Barnett, to take place at Wellington on Wednesday, September 18. Land in and around Foxton has for some time past had an upward tendency, and in view of the extension of the railway to Wellington on one side, and to Sandon on the other, it is sure to increase in value in the future. Railway Time-Table. — The Wanganui Herald of a recont date says : — " The railway time-table is now under revision by the Manager, and some important and beneficial changes will shortly be made. Among the other matters we believe a train will leave the Rangitikei district in the morning, so that Bulls and Marton passengers can be in town shortly after tun a.m." Sale of Cloth. — Messrs. Thynne, Linton and Co. announce a sale of cloth, &c, under distraint for rout, ou Thursday next, 12 th September, at 2 o'clook. Native Statement. — On Tuesday aftern noon, in the House of Kepresentatives, before taking the business on, the Order Paper, the Hon. Mr. Sheehan announced that he would not mako the Native Statement that "ighc, uor until such time as the debate on the Land Tax Bill was concluded would they take any other business. This decision has doubtless been arrived at, owing to the uncertain temper of the House, the Govfirnment financial proposals having been submitted to a veiy strong, and, in many cases, adverse criticism. Diocesax Syxod. — We perceive by a notification in another column that a meeting of the members of the Anglican Church in the Manawatu District will ba held in All Saints' Church, Foxton, on Wednesday evening next, at 7.30. The meeting will be held for the purpose of nominating and electing a member to represent the district in the Diocesan £ynod. Foxton School Buijomxos.- It will b e seen by an advertisement in another column that tenders are required for the cr^tftffl of additions to the school>hcvsj^|^H^^| VisiTons. — The wpttage of thoPj^^^^K^^^^B^^A
