TYRE TAX
"NO REBATES."
A deputation of the Marlborough Automobile Association, by appointment, interviewed the member for Wairau (Mr 11. McCallum) on Saturday, on one phase of the proposed motor taxation. At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Automobile Union, with which the Marlborough Association is affiliated, it was agreed that all users of motor vehicles should bear taxation according to the amount of use of the roads by them, and that there should be no rebates to any particulars vehicles. Tho Minister for Internal Affairs, who attended the meeting of the Union, would not agree to the principal of "no rebates," and a deputation, therefore, laid this aspect of the question before Mr MeCallum, and asked him to support the view of the Automobile Associations for payment, of taxation according to the amount of use of roads by the vehicles, which is to be attained by means of a tyre tax. Mr McCallum expressed himself as in favor of the principle expressed by tho Associations, and stated that he would do his best to avoid any particular class of vehicles escaping taxation.
