THE POTATO GLUT
CAN WASTE BE AVOIDED?
There: are reported to bo tons on tons of potatoes, and the quality is very good this year, lying in the Soutli Island stores. Nature has been bountiful to the grower this year—and he wishes she 'hadn't. 1 A merchant informed a rep-resentatr-o of the Wellington Post that ho would he. only too glad to sell potatoes by the sack to anyone who will com'o along with 11s 6d from store in Wellington. They would then cost a fraction over id per pound, and they will keep from three to four months, and are found, good, table sorts, import to Australia is not permissible, Stimulation of local consumption by selling at 11s 6d to 12s a Rack would no doubt help the growers to reduce his holding. But even after fulfilling all New Zealand domestic requirements there would still be a very heavy cany-ovor. What is wanted is some cheap means of delivery of this superabundance of wholesome- and nourishing food, now at bottom prices, into the. homes of the people. If the people could be sure or getting the, potatoes at the Louse of : }d per pound they would effect a saving in the price of the article, case down on bread, assist the grocer, and prevent what portends to be a grievous waste of rtholesomo food for want of better and less costly distributing methods than at present obtain.
