Australian. ex-service men are strongly resenting Archbishop Mannix's attacks on Mr Hughes and are sending protests to the. newspapers pointing out that the A.I.F. highly admires?-Mr Hughes, and that Archbishop Mannix does not represent Australian opinion, and any attempt to tow discord between Britain' and tho United "States is highly dangerous to the peace of, the world. Tho ex-service men ask Americans hot. to forget that Mr Hughes, speaks authoritatively for Australia, while Archbishop Mannix is only a Churchman. It^is reported.that a large number of the crew of the Baltic declared that they would not man theship if Archbishop Mannix was permitted on Board. The firemen, mostly of Irish descent, declared that they would not fire the ship, if Archbishop Mannix was not .permitted to sail. The National Catholic W,ar Council fnnounces that it is rumored, in Rome that Archbishop Mannix ;will bo made a. cardinal . and probably will be transferred to Dublin.
