LONDON, July 31. A cryptic statement was; made by the 'chairman of the council of the Irish .Vigilance Society of Britain that when Archbishop Mannix arrived lie would be accompanied by one who, although not . embarking with him, would keep him company from the Statue of liberty in New York Harbor. The chairman said thai Archbishop Mannix's . distinguished companion would make a landing which would astonish the enemy and create amusing; gossip in the. world. '
Cheers for De Valera followed the statement. • . ■<
A message from New York states that Archbishop Mannix sailed in the liner Baltic, thousands of admirers making a wild demonstration at the dock.
It is added that De Valera did not sail.
Tho chairman of the Queenstown Council, interviewed . regarding the arrangements for a public welcome ty Archbishop Mannix, said: "We don't intend to aiter our arrangements, to ( giye a hearty welcome to such a distinguished Churchman as the Archbishop of Melbourne. If tho British Government adopts measures to prevent him from disembarking at Queenstown, it will be. tho crowning act of :the folly of their dealing's with Ireland and the Irish people. Such an insane act would be a gross -affront to the Catholic Church and be strongly resented by Roman Catholics. How will the British representative at the Vatican explain to the Pope for the treatment extended to a man who is going to Rome to fulfil obligations 'arising out of his sacred office?" Rome messages state that Vatican circles disavow Archbishop Mannix's utterance?, and consider his intemperate manifestation highly blameworthy. The Vatican is surprised at his priorish talk., as it expected that he would refrain from politics.
