An Auckland message states that the settlement between the City Council and the Tramway Officers' Union provides for increased pay in the form of a compromise, the union being met half-way, but the clerks are excluded..

Two boys appeared before Mr P. L. Hollings, S.M., this morning, and were charged with the theft of a Winchester rifle,'of the value of £6, the property of Mr William Masefield. Sergeant Clarkson" explained that the boys set off for Christchurch a few weeks ago without the knowledge of their parents, and, passing through Kekerangu, .entered a tent in the absence of the owner, and carried off the rifle (produced), adding it to other stolen property. The elder sold it to another boy. at Ghristchurch for £1 15s. They were brought back to Blenheim, and the Magistrate dealt with their escapade by placing them on probation for six months. This particular theft was revealed subsequently. The Magistrate entered up convictions against the two accused, and discharged them, explaining that he was thus giving them the opportunity of carrying out'the terms of their probation. The 3os would have to be refunded to the purchaser, and he ordered that the rifle be restored ,to the rightful owner. The elder boy was' then charged with that "he did on May 7th, at New -Brighton, .sell a rifle' tr> one Lyle Stubley without first obtainipg a permit to do so under, the War a Regulations Act, 1915. The Sergeant remarked that under the provisions of this- Act there was a maximum penalty of £100 for the selling of firearms, ammunitions, or explosives without a permit. He had reason to believe that this law was being contravened in Blenheim and elsewhere, and he hoped that" this case would direct attention to the fact that it was still in operation. The Magistrate imposed a fine of 6s, with 7s rosts. He told Sergt. Clarkson to take charge of a revolve^, that the , elder boy procured iii Ulfcristehurcn, and do with it what he thought was best.
