' \ "THRIVEN continuously for seven days and seren nights, over ordinary . . JLJ suburban roadways, on Overland 4. stock car has established at « Indianapolis' V\&. A.,1 a ; new world's mileige record for a light car under ' ■ "168 hours or incessant driving. ~ ■ "^ The Overland 4 in .the days and nights of this remarkable endurance run piled up a.record of 5,452.15 miles. -The car finished the grind on the same Fisk tyres with which it started. To make" this new • ' record, the drivers of Overland ,4 maintained an average speed of 32£ miles an hour, 24 hours a day. Gasoline mileage was 27.24 miles a i gallon. _ • -' '•'.;■■■-. The consistency of Overland 4performance is. showrt in the record of each day's ran. The first day and night the speedometer registered 749 miles. On the second day, the. mark was 77.8. miles*; on the-third, 747 miles; on the foutbh. 793; fifth.: 809j sixth, 823:j and on the last lap of the new world's record, 753 miles. '. '■ The test, the first,of'its kind to bis. tried and actually accomplished 1 by a light oar, started at 9 avni. on February 25, and ended at 9 a.m. ,■ ' on March." 3; " '' "■■[. Officials who'witnessedi the seven-iday run 1 from start to .finish were convinced by a careful examination of the car antj its power plant after ,-■'■ the run that the car was ready to l^epeat the endurance test of the 168 « hours of furious driving largely because ii> had been protected^^ by the new r Triplex springs. The \iraa is considered the highest possible verification : • ' j .. . of the ability of this new spring suspension to* protect the ear .from , road wear and provide big car riding comforb in a motor-car of short ( ■■ ■ . wheelbase'. • > v ■•■». , , ' .'.'■■" ■ ': '. ■■'.■'' ■• '■ N'''•' *' ■' '■•' N ■-'■ ' ■■ ■ " } This record is considered all the', more praiseworthy ■ inasmuch as the . v. ■ ■':,■ v Overland 4 was. driven by ordinary drivers. Tho men chosen for' the grind are» o-mployees of the sales and servica force of the Gibsonr Compnny, and they iiad no previous experience in enduranc© contests. ' They ' dixjve the cai- thi-ough snowstorms and in weather that sent the mercury in tlie street thjerm6meters far below the aero (Gent.) mai'k. During-'the ■ entire i'un there was but on© puncture. A new inner »' tube was placed in the tyre shoe. ! It is conservatively estimated that 5452 miles of driving over tho ordinary run of suburban roads is equal to. the usage and punishment <, to which tho average motor-car owner would subject the car he drives in * * a year's- operation. That makes Overland 4's achievement^ all the more noteworthy in indicating to what high standards tho manufacture . , : of lightweight, economical,, easy-ridiug motor-cars has been raised by an ..Amexican automobile man'ufactui-er.
