TROTTING MILE RECORD.
LOWERED AT WELLINGTON
An event of great interest to trotting enthusiasts was the successful lowering at the Wellington Trotting Club's meeting last week of the Australasian grass mile trotting record. This was successfully achieved by two horses—Author Dillon, owned by the executors of the late Mr J; Knight, and Cathedral Chimes, the pioperty of Mr J. B. Thomson. The task was attempted separately, Author Dillon taking the track first. A flying start,! and pacemakers were allowed. Mr B. Jardine rode Author Dillon, and the galloper Rakaia acted as pacemaker. Splendidly handled, Author DiUon ticked off the ii-ile in 2min Bseo, lowering the record of 2min 11 3-ssec by 3 3-ssec, a result which was cheered by the interested spectators. Cathedral Chimes then took the track, driven by Mr J. Bi'ice, junior, with Mr J. Brice senior, making the pace with Evening Chimes ;is galloper' in shafts. Cathedral Chimes unfortunately had cut his quarter in his preliminary, and it is believed this affected his going slightly. However, though ho took twe seconds longer than his opponent tc accomplish the distance, his time, . 2min lOsec, was 1 3-ssec below the record. In the second round he "boggled" once or twice, and this may have been the result of the injury. The times are the more remarkable (says the Post) from the fact that the" track had been roughened up to some extent by the racing, and that the times of the day's pvents were not in any way remarkable. Author Dillon won for his owners the Wellirgton Trotting Club's purse of 100 so vs.
