THE PEACE CELEBRATIONS

MEETING THE COST.

A conference of representatives of contributing local bodies, convened by the Marlborough Peace Celebrations Association, was held in the Council Chamber at Blenheim on Saturday to consider the situation arising from the action taken by the Omaka and Picton Road Boards in declining to share the supplementary levy required to defray the cost of the celebrations. The Deputy-Mayor (Mr W. D. Pike) was in the chair. AH the local authorities concerned were represented with the exception of the Omaka Road Board, from which a letter was received stating that it could not see its way to supplement its original contribution of £25.

The feeling was expressed that the Omaka Road Board had not treated the other local bodies with courtesy in absenting itself from the conference.

Mr H. J. Stace, the chairman of that body, attended and explained the position taken up by the Picton Road Board. He expresesd his willingness to refer the question to his Board for reconsideration.

After discussion, it was resolved that the chairman of the local bodies which had agreed to share the additional levy wait on the Picton and Omaka Road Boards and urge them to accept the increased quotas. No further action was taken, the final settlement of v the matter being held over pending the interviewing of the two local bodies concerned.
