HIDE AND. TALLOW SALE

The fortnightly sale of hides and tallow was held in Wellington on Friday. A good selection of hides and calfskins was submitted to a full bench of ' tanners and .exporters. Tanners exercised their right of selection freely on :ill lots of sound hide, cut and .slippy lines, and be.stt lots of calfskins. Competition was exceedingly keen, and exporters very freely for all hides and -calfskins not selected by tanners. As ■compared with the. rates ruling at the sale held a fortnight ago, prices showed a substantial advance all ■aieiunxE. Quotations: —Ox, heavy, GOlb.s up, 12jd to 20d: ox, medium, 50 to 59, Ws& to 20} d; ox, light, 49 and under, A9d to 20d; cow; heavy, 5-5 and over, 18£ dto 19^d; cow,medium, 42 to 54. lod to 21d; cow, light, .under 42, IM to 21d; out, slippy, and inferior, 94 to .lpjd; bull, stag, ll£d to 16M; yearlings (lfilbs to 241bs), 14d to 59id; calf, superior, (up to 161bs), calf, medium- to good (up to 161bs), ta'feen by tanners ;■ calf, damaged, (wp to 161bs), 10|d to 37d. Tallow,—-tinder keen competition from manufacturers and shippers values,in tlie majority of instances, according to quality, showed a slight advance upan prices current at the last auction sales: —In casks, 56s to 71s 6d; in tjnr, etc., 32s to 60s 6d.
