T\PBESa Association.1} WELLINGTON, Oct. 24. • Information lias been received or disorderly proceedings.-at Greymouth on Moridav evening, when, it is stated, the Methodist School Hall was ■Rfcriouslv damaged and several per•sons injured as a result of. an attack with stohos and other missiles by a 1-ostile crowd in the street. A '-'nesting of the Protestant Poliiieal Association was being1 held in the ■hail at the time, among those present being the .Rev.'Howard Elliott.
Official information goes to show >hat about 500 assembled in Chappell Street, o.utside the Methodist Hall. Stones were thrown at the windows of the building, 30 panes being broken. ) Two or three persons inside ihe' hail were. struck by stones, but none,were .seriously hurt. i
■ Beyond the stone-throwing there was no listurbance of any moment.
All the available police were preseriii, and they did everything in their power to enforce order. • Sbme of the stones were thrown from the roof of, a house in the vicinity of the hall, but as the street was badly lighted the x'olice could not identify the offenders. It is stated that there was a feeling of hostility to Mr Elliott, and that the police found it necessary to r.fi'ord h}-ii protection ' until he left for Christchurch on Tuesday morning. ■■'■.. ..'.', ■ .
