THE FUTURE OF CANADA.

The .political importance of Canada, was discussed recently in an article by Lieutenant-Colonel F. D. Adams, I dean of faculty of applied science at McGi.ll University. He observes that through the westward trend of power and influence in the modern world, the Dominion of Canada now finds it_ self occupying a central position in the civilised globe, with the neighboring nations brought ever closer to it by the continually increasing rapidity of communication provided through the discoveries of modern science. Some color is thus given to the ofb-quoted statement of Sir Wilfrid Laurier that the twentieth ceniiry would be Canada's century or to that other statement by Sir Cecil Spring-Rice, that in his opinion the British Empire would one day centre in Canada. Whether these predictions are verified or not, ;it is evident that Canada is destined to occupy in the immediate future a very important place in tho Empire. Another very important fact in this connection is that Canada forms, in many v ays, a bond of union between the British Empire and the United States. It was this fact that was ever in the mind of that distinguished officer and warm friend of Great Britain the1 late Admiral Mahan, of the United S*tates Navy. The loyalty of Canadians to ths British Empire and their ability to understand the problems with which the Empire is confronted has been abundantly confiimed by the events of the past five years. Canada and the United States have a common boundary which stretches across raie, continent for a distance of 3000 miles, and is vnique not only on account of its length, but in that along its whole extent there is no fort, gun, picket ov senary.
