HEW ZEALAND AND IMMIGRATION
THE NEED FOR. ADVERTISING
A well-known New Zealand pressman, who was for a long time conreefced with the N.Z.E.F., publicity section, in London, writing to a friend in Christchurch under date of February 26th, saysri— It must be obvious to anyone who thinks about the problem of emigration from this country in future years that now is the time to prepare a bold scheme of advertising which will appeal to the mcii who will go abroad in thousands when normal conditions return. These men cannot ,0,0 now, ad until \the labor markets in t/he colonies right themselves, immigrants will not be wanted; but there is no doubt the men—and desirable men, too —arc going' when their chance comes, :md why shouldn't New Zealand be ready with a wejeome right fiom the word "go," so that she Avill be able to compete with Canada and Australia in selecting the best mater- j lal ? The position in the Strand here i in London, any night will show 7. on liow we stand. Outside Australia House you will find a crowd watching splendidly attractive films, which provide pictures of --life in Australia, and which provide one of the best advertising "stunts" I' have seen. In other parts of the Strand, and other busy streets, brilliantly lit/. 1 m-, dows blaze out all the■ iittraetiofis of! the different States of Cp.hat'hi. And J theii" right in the ~ h6art of London! you will ftnd.tha r\ew Zealand offices dark ant!. silent, the blinds complet&ijTdvyiwn over the windows, and «ffecMvely hiding anything they may cfclitain from view. New Zealand's soldiers, and nothing else, have advertised New Zealand in a remark-, able way; in a few months the diers will have gone, and with their departure New Zealand will silently drop off the map as far as "the man in the street" over here is concerned.
