BIG RATES AND BAD GAS.
[TO THE EDJTOII.]
Sir, —T would like to call attention to tho alarming manner in which tho borough rate is being increased in tliis town. Seven years ago our borough rate was £8 1.2s lOd; to-day ifc is over £18. Surely there is no sense in increasing people's burdens when so many of our men are going to the front and it is more difficult to keep our business going. I see by tho report of the Gasworks that they made a profit of £1300 last year. How much longer are we going to endure such poor gas as wo get? And how many more years are-they going to charge 6d rent for each meter that does not burn 2s Gd worth of gas per month ? Wo have been paying Is per month rent since they started this, and think the meters ought to be bought by this time.
