BOROUGH COUNCIL

The ordinary meeting of the Blenheim Borough Council was held last night. There were present: His "Worship1 the Mayor (Mr J. J. Corry), Councillors E. S. Parker, F. Birch, W. D. Pike, B. J. Cooke, M. McKenzie, A. Curry, A. J. Leslie, W. E. Gascoigne. PERSONAL. The memory of soldiers representing this district who had .fallen at the front, recently was honored, and a, resolution of condolence with their relatives was passed in respectful silence. A feeling tribute was paid to tho memory of the late Yen. Archdeacon Grace, by the Mayor, who moved a vote of * sympathy with the widow and family of tlio deceased clergyman. All the Councillors spoke in terms expressing the highest esteem of the character and influence of the latq vicar. THE WATRAU BRIDGE. The Council received copies of the reports in which the inspectors to the Lower "Wairau River Board and the' Wairau-Road Board embodied their recommendations as to the works required for the protection of the northern approach of the Wairaubridge. The Town Clerk reported that the secretary of the Pelorus Road Board had telephoned him that that Board had decided not to convene a conference of contributing local bodies ns had been suggested by the Omaka Road Board and requested by the Borough. -.Council. Councillor Parker said that ' the Council was not • acquainted with the 1 Pelorus Road Board's decisioit until; the last moment, and this delay ways not at all fair. He thought thai the recommendations of the River j Board's inspector contained a much) better idea than that counselled by the Public Works Department. It was all' the more acceptable as its estimated cost (£200) was one-tenth of what the Department's scheme_■] would cost. He very much regretted! that the Pelorus Board would; not. even go tho length of calling a conference. After some discussion it was, on the motion of Councillor Parker^ . resolved ..that, the Pelorus Board having refused to convene a conference to consider the necessity, pointed out by the Public -Works! Department, or attending to the pi'o- I teetion of the bridge, and to consider j the inspectors* reports, the Council j invite the other contributing authorities ~to attend a conference. ""—"""—" GENERAL. A letter from the secretary of the j Tenth Mounted Regimental Band in j regard to the subsidy for the ensuing ] year was referred to the Finance Committee. ,No tenders for the leasing of the j Town Hall .were received.—The Town Hall Co7nmitte<? was asked to- bring up a proposition. At the instance of Councillor Gascoigne, the Works Committee was asked to Took to the grading of certain metalled footpaths, to present a return the cost of asphalting Maxwell Road, and toconsider the question of running a municipal rubbish carl;.
