TWO TO THREE ACRES DEVASTATED.
[Pawa Association.! DANKKViIRKIS, Oct. 23. Dahnevirke is busy to-day conplating the scone of yesterday's disastrous blaze. The debris burned all night, 1-ut tlio brigade confined it tjt> the area over which the flames ravenously -swept, and, despite thegale, there was no further spread. Nothing remains of what was yesterday morning the centre of the town but bare bride walls, tottering chimneys, twisted galvanised iron, and charred sticks. A track was cut right through the
centre of the tcsvn and the whole area devastated, comprising about two to three acres. Stpps are being taken by the Mayor, the chairman of the I>aime>virke County Council, the president of the Chamber of Commerce, and Mr Cr. Hunter, M.P., to organise re-ticii for the sufferers, and n special appeal is being 'made to old Da-nnevirke residents throughout the- country tic rally round the sufferers. Most of the representatives of the insurance companies met on the scene of the 'disaster. Three pilferers of .salvage appeared before the Court, to-day. Two were fined £10 each and one £5, in default fourteen days' imprisonment.
