MILITARY SERVICE APPEALS.
THE SAWMILLING INDUSTRY
GREYMOUTH, Sept. 29.
At the Military Appeal Board West Coast sawmillers requested consideration of the exemption of sawyers, break-down men, and leading bushmen. The sawmilling staff was so depleted that it was impossible to replace these men, upon whom the carrying on of the sawmilling industry depended. If they were taken by the military the mills would close down.. If exempted, it was possible to eke out existence, with the aid of raw recruits. .
The chairman (Mr Evans) suggested a reduction in the number of mills. Three-fourths of the timber was cut for export. It was advisable that only the best mills should be kept going. The Millers' Association could agree as to the reduction. The Board asked for derails of the .average outpiit, capacity, etc.
