On account of the large quantity of cargo to be shipped, the departure of the Pateena from Wellington for Picton and Nelson to-day wa-s delayed. It was hoped to despatch the vessel about 3 o'clock. A spe'eial train will bring the passengers and mails to Blenheim. Bridget Foloy, wife of the licensee of the Cricketers' Arms Hotel, was fined £10 at the Wellington Police Court this morning for a breach of the anti-"shouting" regulations. A barmaid of the Grand Hotel was fined £5, but the fine was increased to £10 to allow of ;in appeal. Three other cases were adjourned. No steamers having called at Knikoura for three weeks owing to the strike, and the roads being impassable on account of flood damage, tho position iv regard to foodstuffs is serious. At a representative meeting yesterday afternoon, it was resolved to telegraph to Mr Massey, pointing out the gravity of the situation and requesting Cabinet at once to appoint a tribunal to deal with the strike or to pass legislation on maritime matters. The Wellington Gas Company announces a considerable advance in the price of gas, consequent on increased cost of manufacture and heavy taxation.
