PROLONGED SHOCKS

An earthquake—prolonged and pronounced, but hot very severe— was experienced in Blenheim at about twenty-five minutes past three this morning.

The severest phock of earthquake felt in Wellington for. some yejirs. occurred at 3.22 tliis'"inbrnine;.' There'; was a slight shock also about four or five o'clock. No damage has . been reported. Both clocks at the General Post Office stopped. MASTERTON. , One of the worst earthquakes experienced occurred at 3.15 this morning. Damage was done in various parts of the district by falling chimneys. Several minor shocks occurred after the big shake. Another shock was feit at 9.15 this morning Hundreds.o*f pounds xworth of damage was done in some parts by, tlie big shake. Several narrow escapes are reported. PAHIATUA. An earthquake of exceptional severity occu red at 3,20 a.m. It was a prolonged shock. Buildings rocked violently. There were several smaller shakes at intervals up to five o'clock. The direction appeared to bo from north to south. Chimneys were »azed to. che ground and windows and glass doors were broken. Brick walls suffered and lavatory cisterns we're emptied. Articles in private houses and business places were smashed. DANNEVIRKE. A severe and prolonged earthauake was felt at 3.30 a.m., followed by a' slighter shock half an hour later. No damage of any consequence was done. At Titree Point nine, shakes | were experienced, six within half an hour., WANGANUI. A severe prolonged earthquake was felt at 3.18' this morning.. NAPIER. A violent earthquake occurred at , 3.25 this morning and lasted sixty I seconds. A minor shake was felt on ! Saturday evening. 1-ALMERSTON NORTH. The severest earthquake in a decade startled the town at. 3.2o'this morning, followed at intervals by five other shocks. Buildings were violently shaken by the first visitation, but no damage has been reported so far. CHRISTCHUItCH. Ther earthquake was not felt by residents, but was registered on the instrument at the observatory. It was a very large motion, which lasted for three minutes. The total duration of the tremors was one hour, beginning at 3.21.
