At a time when grain and foodstuffs generally rule high in price, tho annual loss through depredations of rate is a serious matter. Still more serious, however, is the known fact that- rats are distributors of certain diseases, therefore a steady war of extermination should ever be waged against the vagrant rodent. At Auckland, however, rats are more numerous than was tho case a year or two ago, especially in some of the suburbs. The c'ty sanitary office -s are exercising the greatest care in the matter, and the crusade against rats is_ being vigorously prosecuted. Ratepayers are supplied with poison by the city authorities free of charge upon application fco the Town Clerk, fo it should not be too much' trouble for resident.-; to attempt to exterminate the rats by laying down the stuff.
