NATIONAL SERVICE BOARD.
OOUNIT OF SOUNDS DISTRICT
COMMITTEE
The first meeting of the above comjnitteo was held at the Portage on the 22nd inst., when the following appointments were made:—-Chairman,' Sir Grimsdale Anderson; delegates to central committee (if set up) .Mesws Anderson and F. C Fell: trustees for soldiers' farms, Messrs H. A. McCormick, P. C. Fell, and C. P. Harris. It was decided that meetings of the committee should be held, at the Portage on the second Saturday in the month, beginning with the second Saturday in June, provided no urgent {fusitfess came: up in the meantime.
After- the arranging of routine and ether business, the following ration on cool storage, moved by Mr I<. C. Fell and seconded by Mr W. HfendcTson, was carried:—"That in view of tho serious effects of submarining on the carrying capacity of the world's plunping, and that New Zealand,- being so far from the war centre,'may, in the near future, have its shipping facilities very materially reduced, the Government *be urged to take steps at <once largely to increase the coldstorage capacity of the Dominion. That to finance the scheme, a loan be float-^ J within tho Dominion, and costs of i'itf>rest, maintenance, etc., be guaranty--I by a universal income tax on all producers of perishable goods within the Dominion." The following financial motion, proposed by Mr Anderson, and seconded h? Mr Fell, was also carried: — "'That this committee wish to briny, under tho notice of the National Efficiency Board the necessity of the Govern ment accepting Government ■war stock in lieu of cash in payment o,f excess profits tax, otherwise money that-would be available for a war Joan wo"ld be held up until the tax is collected." It was decided to send on Loth these motions for the consideration of the Nation;-! Service Board, as the committee considered them to be matters
of urgent importance. It is proposed to advertise the Retting up of the County of Sounds District Committee by a printed notice displayed in all the Post and Telefhone offices throughout the district, nformotion as to tho objects and scope of the committee and board of trustees for soldiers' farms will bo furnished hv tho hon sec., Mr R. . I>. Fell. N-'kau Bay, Pelorus Sound. MiFell' will, nlso be glnd to receive, and •bring before the committee, any suggestions or business bearing upon the work of the National Service Board.
